Changes in Susan's writing reflect her shifting foci in other areas. As an advisor, she's become more of a personal coach than expressive arts therapist. As an artist, she's become more of a full-time professional than hobby painter. DocSusan's earlier (published books) explore artmaking, reading, writing, and journaling, as important therapeutic tools. Her upcoming books and blog are more concerned with actual life experiences—everyday happenings and challenges.
Writer's Statement
Writing that expresses what others often think and feeli, but might not have the words or confidence to come out and say, for fear of appearing awkward or misunderstood
Most of the pieces I write incubate for a long time. Fresh events, or connections, then act as catalysts: can ignite the need for them to surface at particular moments. But, no matter when that it is, underlying truths and habitudes pervade. I like to mean what I say and say what I mean. Also, my being a perfectionist can be a blessing a curse. Most of what ends up coming into print is worked and reworked, even if it doesn’t look like it might be. A lot of effort goes on behind the scenes, much good stuff (by others’ standards) not even getting an airing. I end up being my own best and worst critic and censor (as well as friend).
